In Uganda, there are several initiatives focused on supporting the elderly, which include programs run by different organizations and government initiatives.
One notable effort is the special grant introduced by the Government of Uganda for elderly persons aged 60 to 79 years who are not beneficiaries of the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) program. This grant aims to assist older persons who are out of business but still productive. Groups of 5 to 10 elderly persons can access the grant, with each group receiving five million shillings for ventures like farming and poultry. The Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development, along with Community Development Officers, monitors the use of these funds to ensure proper utilization.
HIDA – Uganda have programs specifically geared towards supporting the elderly. Their Elderly Support Program, backed by international partners, provides essential services such as food, housing, and medical assistance, reaching out to hundreds of elderly individuals in different districts.
Save The Elderly Uganda focuses on home-based care services, offering a comprehensive range of support including personal care, medication management, and rehabilitation services. This approach is designed to cater to the unique needs of each senior, ensuring they receive necessary care while maintaining their independence
In the context of HIDA’s work in Uganda, understanding these various initiatives can provide a framework for the types of services and support that might be offered to the elderly. Such programs typically focus on healthcare, economic empowerment, housing, and overall wellbeing, which are crucial for the dignity and quality of life of older persons in the community. HIDA, being a part of this ecosystem, might be involved in similar efforts to improve the lives of the elderly in Uganda.
